Are You Prepared?: Personal Preparedness is Key!

As we watch communities in KY struggle with flooding and in IL struggle with tornados, we are reminded of the unpredictability of disaster and the importance of personal preparedness. Personal preparedness will not only help alleviate personal stress in disaster, but also put us in a better position to help those around us. Here are four simple things we can do to be better prepared.

1. Important Documents
It is crucial to have your important documents in a fire-proof/water-proof container or safety deposit box. Be sure to write your contact information on the safe with a paint pen or permanent marker. It may be necessary to keep originals of documents like a birth certificate. Digitally store other important documents online in a cloud storage.

2. Emergency Supply
It is also essential that you have emergency supplies on hand in case of disaster, such as bottled water, non-perishable food items, batteries, flashlight, and a radio. Although relief supplies tend to show up quickly, it is always a good idea to have at least a week’s worth of supplies on hand.

3. A Disaster Plan
It is extremely important that you have a plan for yourself and your family. Designate a safe place for meeting in case of a fire or anything that could make you leave your home quickly. Designate an emergency contact outside of your community, preferably a friend or family member living in another state. Be sure everyone has the phone number memorized and knows when to call that number.

4. Check Your Policies
Be sure to check your insurance policy so you know what you are and are NOT covered for. One of the worst things we can have happen is to find out after the fact that we did not have the proper coverage. Insufficient coverage is a quick way to add tons of stress to an already stressful situation.
Personal preparedness is vital for us, our family, and our neighbors. Nobody else can be held responsible for how prepared we are or are not in time of disaster. For more information on being prepared visit www.ready.gov/make-a-plan.
